Facial Fillers from Dr. Reitzen

Dermal fillers (also called “facial fillers”) are cosmetic injectables that can be used to plump up or “fill” areas of the face or body — hence their name. Facial fillers are made of synthetic proteins that can be used to fill deep wrinkles and areas of the face that have lost volume. Cosmetic injectables are one of the primary services at our practice.

Why Choose Dermal Fillers?

Patients choose dermal fillers to help their skin appear smoother and younger, with reduced wrinkles and less apparent volume loss. Restoring that youthful plumpness, filling the lips, and softening the appearance of wrinkles provides a boost in self-image and confidence, which is why facial fillers are so in demand.

Facial Fillers vs. Cosmetic Injections of Fat

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance in our bodies. Synthetic forms of it can be injected to augment the face and soften wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid and fat are the two most commonly used fillers, with each offering different advantages.

Hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers come ready to inject out of the box, can be easily injected, and can provide results up to nine months.

Injection of fat is a little more extensive but gets longer-lasting results, as well as a very natural looking and feeling outcome. The “filler” used is fat from your own body — more specifically, from an area where fat can be spared, such as the stomach, hips, or thighs. This procedure requires an incision near the area where fat will be removed, as well as the process of liposuction to suction out the fat. Once this has been done, the fat will be processed and then injected into areas of the face where the filler is needed. The effects of fat injections can be permanent; however, we cannot determine how much of the fat will “take” after injection due to resorption. For this reason, additional treatments of facial filler in Upper East Side may be necessary to achieve the desired results.

Dr. Reitzen’s Approach

Dr. Reitzen’s goal with cosmetic injectables in Upper East Side is to achieve a natural look. She never wants dermal filler to be obvious or look overdone; therefore she uses a graduated approach. This means that she will start slowly and build to avoid over-injecting.

One syringe of filler is equivalent to 1/5 of a teaspoon — so if you can picture that, you will understand that you would need many syringes before looking over-injected.

What to Expect Afterward

One of the best aspects of cosmetic injectables is that they require little downtime because they are less invasive than surgery. After your injections, you can expect mild swelling and bruising for a few days, but otherwise, you should be able to return to your everyday routine. Different dermal fillers have different at-home care, onset of results, and longevity, so during your consultation, Dr. Reitzen will inform you of what you specifically can expect. If for any reason you’re unhappy with the results, facial fillers can be reversed. Dr. Reitzen usually recommends a follow-up at two weeks.
